The Prison Officers’ Association has renamed its northern regional office in Leeds as Joe Simpson House in honour of former deputy general secretary Joe Simpson.
Family members, friends and colleagues gathered for the ceremony which recognised his long service to the union and the prison service.
Joe Simpson began his career as a prison officer at Manchester Strangeways before later working at Holme House Prison in Stockton on Tees and Northallerton. During his career he became a prominent Prison Officers’ Association activist and union official.
The union said his work representing members, alongside his communication skills and knowledge of the prison service, saw him rise to the role of deputy general secretary.
The Prison Officers’ Association described Mr Simpson as someone who was committed to the trade union movement and to supporting working class communities.
Speaking at the naming ceremony, POA general secretary Steve Gillan said, “Renaming our North Regional Office Simpson House is a fitting tribute to Joe. It means his name will be remembered in the history of the POA. It is a very appropriate way to recognise my colleague and friend who I knew for over 30 years.”
POA chair Mark Fairhurst added, “Joe was not only a true trade unionist, he was also a true friend. He always had time for everyone and was unwavering in his support for POA members and his campaigning on the issues that affected us all. I am so proud that his name will live on within the POA and the naming of Simpson House would have put a big smile on Joe’s face. We all miss Joe dearly.”
The ceremony was attended by Mr Simpson’s partner Emma alongside family members, friends and colleagues.
