Newhouse Academy has been awarded the Quality in Careers Standard full award following an external assessment completed in March 2026. The school said the accreditation recognises two years of work developing its careers education programme.
The Quality in Careers Standard is recognised as the national benchmark for careers education, information, advice and guidance. Newhouse Academy said achieving the full award confirms its careers programme goes beyond statutory requirements and follows evidence that all eight Gatsby Benchmarks have been met.
An assessor's report from Career Connect described the programme as "comprehensive, fully planned and integrated" and said there was "unambiguous evidence" that the school actively reviews and measures the impact of its careers provision on students.
The report highlighted the work of the school's careers team, including co ordinator Miss Jones, careers administrator Miss Jamieson, careers lead Mrs Gregory Harris and Positive Steps careers adviser Mrs Pugh. Assessors praised the team's commitment and record keeping.
Careers learning has also been incorporated across classroom subjects. The school said this includes STEM visits, construction based learning and career mapping within English, maths and science lessons.
Students take part in weekly Personal Development lessons through the school's People PSHE curriculum, with sessions focused on career skills and preparation for work experience. Pupils also use the Xello platform to explore labour market information and transferable skills.
The assessment also highlighted support available for vulnerable learners, with one to one impartial guidance available through Positive Steps. Assessors noted this support ensured pupils who needed additional guidance were not overlooked.
Students, staff and parents also took part in the assessment process. According to the school, students spoke positively about the Xello platform and the Future Foundations careers fair. Parents said careers provision and guidance around academic and vocational routes had been an important factor in choosing the school.
Newhouse Academy also highlighted its involvement with the Greater Manchester Combined Authority and its role on the Manchester Baccalaureate advisory panel. The school said these partnerships help strengthen links between education, technical qualifications and future employment opportunities.
Speaking to Roch Valley Radio, they said, "Achieving the Quality in Careers Standard full award is the result of a genuine team effort. From our teachers linking their subjects to the workplace, to our Year 10s showing the independence to find their own work experience placements, everyone has played a part."
The school said it plans to build on the award by expanding employer networks and preparing for future careers education requirements in Key Stage 3.
