A manufacturer based in Heywood is preparing to launch new artificial intelligence technology designed to improve safety on driverless rail networks. The system is being developed by GJD Manufacturing and is expected to enter the market in 2026.
GJD Manufacturing says its new detection system is designed to identify objects that fall between train platforms and carriages, an issue considered one of the key safety challenges for automated rail systems.
The technology uses sensors and artificial intelligence to distinguish genuine hazards while reducing the risk of false alerts caused by reflections or environmental factors. The company says this could improve passenger safety and reduce disruption across automated transport networks.
The project represents the latest stage of the firm's wider research and development work in Heywood. Since 2017, GJD has worked with academic and industry partners on a range of technology projects, including a long range scanner developed with Manchester Metropolitan University.
Hussain Asif, software engineer at GJD Manufacturing, said, "Accessing innovation expertise is a must for any SME. It’s helped us grow our capability and turned ideas into real products. For a business like ours, having access to the right knowledge and support makes a huge difference."
The company says the project could also support expansion into international markets as driverless rail systems continue to develop across parts of Europe, Asia and Australia.
Alongside export ambitions, the work is expected to create specialist jobs locally, including roles linked to artificial intelligence and sensor technology.
Yvonne Grady, Director of Innovation and Digitisation at GM Business Growth Hub, said, "Businesses like GJD Manufacturing show the strength of innovation happening across Rochdale and Greater Manchester. By tapping into specialist knowledge and collaboration, they’re developing technologies with real global relevance while creating skilled jobs and long term growth locally."
The company says similar technology may also have future uses in other sectors including perimeter security systems.
