A Greater Manchester housebuilder has donated £1,500 to Rochdale Sea Cadets to support maintenance work at the organisation’s headquarters and help continue activities for young people in the borough.
The donation was made by Barratt Homes Manchester through the Barratt Redrow Foundation community fund scheme.
Rochdale Sea Cadets provides activities and training opportunities for young people, focusing on teamwork, confidence, discipline and leadership.
Officer in Charge Sally Tisdall said the unit headquarters requires significant maintenance work due to the age of the building.
She said: “The unit headquarters of the Rochdale Sea Cadets is one of the largest in the country but it is extremely dated and requires substantial maintenance work.
“The donation from Barratt Homes will go towards helping us continue to strive to make the unit a place for local children to thrive and achieve a variety of qualifications and experiences that may not otherwise be available to them.”
Ms Tisdall, who served in the Royal Navy, has led the Rochdale unit for the past three years. She said cadet numbers and volunteer numbers have increased during her time in charge.
She also paid tribute to her grandfather, Lieutenant Commander Lawrence Scholes, who was involved with Rochdale Sea Cadets for more than 70 years.
Ms Tisdall said: “He was CO when our Unit HQ burned down and spent years fundraising to enable our current building to be built back in the early 1980s. He passed away in October 2023 but for his whole life was committed to the unit.
“Thank you to Barratt Homes for helping me and the hardworking and dedicated volunteer staff members and cadets at the Unit, to continue my grandfather's legacy and help our unit flourish.”
The donation was made through the Barratt Redrow Foundation, which supports charities and community organisations in areas where the housebuilder operates.
The foundation is marking its fifth anniversary in 2026. Barratt Homes said it has committed £20 million to charities and community causes since launching and has supported more than 2,000 charities.
Rhys Nicholson, managing director at Barratt Homes Manchester, said: “We are proud to support Rochdale Sea Cadets. Not only does it provide young people with excellent opportunities to expand their horizons, but through this donation, we’re also supporting the continuation of the Scholes family legacy, and it’s a legacy to be very proud of.”
Barratt Homes is also preparing to launch its Loombrook Meadows development on Cowm Top Lane in Rochdale later this year.
