Rochdale Town Hall has been shortlisted for the Royal Institute of British Architects first conservation award, recognising the restoration of historic buildings and places. The winner will be announced later this year at the Stirling Prize ceremony.
The restored Grade One listed building is among the projects shortlisted for the Royal Institute of British Architects inaugural conservation award, which celebrates architecture that has the creativity and sensitivity to transform and secure historic buildings and places.
Judges praised the restoration for opening areas of the town hall that had not previously been accessible to the public. They also recognised the wider impact of the project, including the creation of 1,194 volunteer, training and job opportunities.
The judges also highlighted sustainability measures introduced as part of the redevelopment, which have reduced the building's environmental impact and significantly lowered its running costs.
The restoration was supported by funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
Councillor Sue Smith, Rochdale Council's cabinet member for communities and cooperation, said, "I'm delighted that the redevelopment of Rochdale Town Hall has been shortlisted for yet another award, to add to the many it has already picked up. This incredible project, funded with support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, has not only seen the meticulous restoration of a remarkable building, it has also given it back to the people of Rochdale and our many visitors through a full programme of events and activities that have made it more exciting and relevant than ever before.
"The town hall has welcomed tens of thousands of visitors since it reopened in March 2024 and brought this space to a whole new audience who have never experienced it before. I'm delighted that this has been recognised on the national stage once again and that it's rightly being recognised among the most prestigious heritage projects in the country."
Rochdale Town Hall reopened in March 2024 following its restoration and has since welcomed tens of thousands of visitors through its programme of public events and activities.
The winner of the conservation award will be announced during the Stirling Prize ceremony later this year.
