Reform UK mayoral candidate backs campaign to reopen Bury Castle Armoury

Reform UK's candidate for Greater Manchester Mayor has pledged support for a campaign to reopen Bury Castle Armoury.

Sian Astley visited the site to meet campaigners and veterans following a council vote on the building's future.

Councillor Sian Astley visited Bury Castle Armoury on Thursday, where she met campaigners and veterans calling for the building to be reopened.

The visit took place a day after Bury Council approved a motion concerning the future of the armoury.

The motion, tabled by the Reform UK group on the council, called for the building to be removed from the market.

During the council debate, Reform UK group leader Councillor Jack Rydheard said the armoury had the potential to attract visitors to Bury and provide educational opportunities for local people.

Speaking during her visit, Councillor Astley said, "The Castle Armoury holds a special place in the hearts of many veterans in Bury and across Greater Manchester. Its safeguarding and restoration presents an incredible opportunity to promote tourism and drive economic growth in Bury.

"As Mayor, I would fully back the efforts spearheaded by Reform UK and Bury Council to get the armoury back to its former glory. It's about time we brought back pride in our military history."

The motion's approval means Bury Council has agreed to pursue the proposals set out during the debate regarding the future of the historic building.
