Hathershaw College welcomed Oldham West, Chadderton and Royton MP Jim McMahon to discuss its plans for a new school building and its vision for the future.
School leaders also spoke about preserving the site's historic features while improving facilities for future generations of pupils.
Jim McMahon visited Hathershaw College to meet principal Susie Fraser, senior leaders and representatives from The Pinnacle Learning Trust.
During the visit, the school outlined its bid for a new building, which it says would provide modern learning facilities while supporting its ambition to help every pupil succeed.
School leaders also discussed the importance of retaining key historic features of the existing building should the bid be successful, recognising the school's long standing role within the local community.
Hathershaw College says it is the only secondary school in Oldham yet to benefit from a new school building and believes the project would represent a significant investment in education across the borough.
Principal Susie Fraser said, "It was a pleasure to welcome Jim McMahon to The Hathershaw College and to share with him our aspirations for the school. As well as discussing the important history of the school and its place within the community, we were able to look ahead to the prospect of a new school building.
"If we are successful in our bid, we share Mr McMahon's hopes that we can retain some of the original features of our building, as it symbolises an important point in time, but we know that our young people now deserve a building that is in line with our hopes and aspirations for them as the next generation of our town."
Mr McMahon said, "It was a pleasure to visit Hathershaw College and hear more about its ambitions for the future. The school has a proud history and has served generations of local families, but it's clear that today's pupils deserve a learning environment that matches the high aspirations staff have for them. That's why I've been pleased to support the school's bid for a new building. If successful, it will be a real investment in the future of our young people, while retaining the historic features that reflect the school's important place in our community."
