The National Poppy Appeal has been launched in Bury today (Thursday 26 October) as we remember the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives and livelihoods during past and current conflicts.
Each year the British Royal Legion organises the poppy appeal which, as well as commemorating the fallen, raises funds to support men and women in the armed forces today.
Poppies will be available at locations across Bury, and can also be ordered from the British Royal Legion at https://www.britishlegion.org.uk/ where you can also make a donation directly.
Councillor Sandra Walmsley, the Mayor of Bury, said: “Every year the Poppy Appeal brings together our community in support of the brave men and women who fought for our freedom and those who continue to protect and serve our community. The British Royal Legion provide vital support to veterans and their families, their amazing work helps ensure that those who protect us are also protected and cared for in return. Make sure to get your poppy as a way to remember the sacrifices made and show your support for our armed forces and veterans.”
A Civic Service of Remembrance will be held on Sunday 12 November, 2022. Processions will depart from Bury Town Hall at 10.30am and will proceed along Knowsley Street, Haymarket Street and Market Street to the Cenotaph at Bury Parish Church.
A two-minute silence will be observed at 11am.
The Mayor of Bury and representatives of service, ex-service, pre-service and civilian organisations across Bury will lay wreaths at the Memorial. An Order of Proceedings sheet will be available and members of the public present are invited to join in the singing of hymns during the Wreath Laying Ceremony.
At the conclusion of the Wreath Laying Ceremony, a Service of Remembrance will be held in Bury Parish Church. Following this, a “March Past” of various detachments will take place at approximately 12.30pm, where the mayor will take the salute. The processions will dismiss, and light refreshments will be served in the Elizabethan Suite.
The Festival of Remembrance on Saturday 11 November and Remembrance Sunday on 12 November.
