Hundreds of NHS operating theatre staff at four hospitals in Greater Manchester will be back on strike for three days next week in a dispute about overtime payments, says UNISON
More than 350 Northern Care Alliance Foundation Trust (NCA) employees, including nurses, clinical support workers, and housekeepers at Rochdale Infirmary, Royal Oldham Hospital, Fairfield Hospital in Bury, and Salford Royal Hospital are walking out on Monday 24th, Wednesday 26th, and Friday 28th August.
UNISON says an offer to resolve the dispute was initially tabled by NCA bosses but withdrawn before discussions could take place.
The row centres on the trust's use of an outside agency (NHS Professionals (NHSP)) to manage overtime.
When covering staff shortages, staff are entitled to time-and-a-half pay. However, the union says that in some cases, staff would earn less than they would on a normal shift, with some missing out on more than £80 per shift.
Operating theatre staff were previously on picket lines at all four aforementioned sites in June.
UNISON North West regional organiser Kevin Dolan said: “Those at the top of NCA have shown a lack of leadership and made their disregard for their staff clear.
“A deal was put on the table but taken away before we had chance to talk it over. We are ready to continue negotiations, but it’s obvious NCA has no intention of resolving this.
“This isn’t complicated. Staff are simply asking for what their contract says they’re entitled to. Nothing more.”
Staff from all four sites will gather in Salford on Wednesday 26th August for a unified day of protest.
