New contractor appointed as Touchstones Rochdale transformation enters final year

The multi million pound transformation of Touchstones Rochdale has reached another milestone with the appointment of a new contractor to deliver the next phase of the project.

Schofield and Sons has begun work on the building's first floor galleries and further roof repairs ahead of the venue's planned reopening in summer 2027.

The Greater Manchester construction company moved onto the site this month and will refurbish the first floor gallery spaces, creating improved conditions for artwork alongside brighter and more modern spaces for visitors.

The latest phase follows the completion of ground floor, basement and initial roof works by H H Smith and Sons Ltd.

Those earlier works included new flexible performance spaces, a 130 seat studio, meeting rooms, education facilities, a reception area, dining and collections space, a kitchen and artwork storage facilities.

The redevelopment is funded by the Cultural Development Fund, administered by Arts Council England, together with Rochdale Borough Council. Additional funding for the first floor galleries has been provided by The Wolfson Foundation, while The Dining Room has been supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Councillor Sue Smith, Rochdale Borough Council's cabinet member for communities and co operation, said, "Appointing Schofield and Sons is another milestone as this amazing project moves into its final year and I am excited to see the improvements to the gallery spaces over the coming months.

"These galleries will house major exhibitions and significant collections, and they are often what residents remember so well when reflecting on their memories of this building. I cannot wait to see the transformation continue over the coming months, turning the building into something truly wonderful and fit for the 21st century, creating more opportunities for everyone to enjoy culture and the history of our borough in a more modern public space."

The redevelopment forms part of the wider creative district programme in Rochdale town centre, which also includes the restoration of Rochdale Town Hall, the creation of the new town hall square, the Fire Up digital and creative workspace, artist studios on Richard Street and new public art.

Estelle Rowe, chief executive of Your Trust, which will operate the venue when it reopens, said, "These new galleries will enable artists to present exceptional artworks and we have exciting plans for them. The spaces will help us connect past and present art and ideas, engaging residents and visitors and bringing more world class artists to the core of our activities."

The project is being delivered through a partnership between Rochdale Borough Council, Your Trust and Rochdale Development Agency.
