Manchester City Council has told management at Kimpton Clocktower Hotel that it will potentially withdraw its provisional booking for the Best of Manchester Awards ceremony in October.
Since June 30th, workers at the Kimpton Clocktower who are members of Unite have been undertaking industrial action due to the hotel owners, IHG, not giving the union official recognition. The dispute, which has continued, has led to members of Unite at the hotel escalating their industrial action, which has in turn caused Manchester City Council (MCC) to tell the hotel's management that they may potentially withdraw its provisional booking for the Best of Manchester Awards ceremony in October.
The dispute centres around IHG's refusal to give Unite members recognition, despite weeks of attempted negotiation from the union. IHG has also controversially fired two Unite representatives since the beginning of the dispute
In a letter to Kimpton Clocktower's management, the deputy leader of MCC, Garry Bridge, has expressed support for the striking workers, calling for the hotel to 'engage positively with any union seeking recognition', adding that 'Manchester occupies a unique place in the history pf the trade union movement and the struggle for workers' rights.' Bridge also said that should the matter not be resolved, MCC will review future and existing bookings at the venue.
Management at the Kimpton Clocktower has not responded at the time of publication to the letter from Mr Bridge.
Previous industrial action taken by workers at the hotel has cause immense disruption to events at The Refuge, the restaurant accompanying the hotel, and has caused viewing parties for the World Cup with the bar being closed early, with there being too few workers to keep the bar open, causing a great financial hit to the business, and leaving customers disappointed.
Workers at Kimpton Clocktower and The Refuge have also escalated strike action. They will now walk out on 31 July to August 2, and 7 to 9 August.
This is the first ever hospitality strike in the North West, and it has no sign of ending soon, as Unite is ramping up their industrial action including a petition calling for IHG to support union recognition, and IHG has not yet responded to recent actions undertaking by Unite and the deputy leader of MCC considering the potential cancellation of plans for the hotel to host the aforementioned Best of Manchester Awards ceremony in October.
