Pubs, clubs and live music venues in Bury are set to receive a 20 per cent reduction in their business rates bills from April next year under new government plans.
The government said the changes are intended to support high streets and help hospitality businesses invest and grow.
The government has announced a new 20 per cent discount on business rates for pubs, clubs and live music venues, with the typical pub expected to save around £1,100 during the next financial year.
The measures are expected to come into effect from April and are intended to support venues that play an important role in local communities.
The government said the package will be funded through changes to business rates reliefs for businesses it considers to make less positive contributions to local communities, including vape shops, alongside measures aimed at reducing business rates avoidance.
Bury North MP James Frith welcomed the announcement.
He said, "I love a pint, and whether on constituency business or socially with friends and family, I've spent a lot of time in pubs across our towns over the years.
"Speaking with landlords across Bury North more recently, I've heard first hand about the pressures they face, and I've been making the case to the Government for action.
"Our pubs are at the heart of our communities. They're where friends meet, families celebrate and people come together. By cutting their bills, while asking anti social businesses like vape shops to contribute more, we're backing the businesses people want to see on our high streets and helping them thrive."
Jen Smith, owner and founder of Broad Street Social in Bury, also welcomed the plans.
She said, "Today's news is positive and certainly a step in the right direction.
"I passionately believe in the value of pubs to our high streets and communities. As well as creating jobs and value in the local economy, they are such important social institutions that need to be cherished. I know from my conversations with James Frith that as our local MP he gets that.
"There's more to do to ensure our business rates system is fairer to pubs and clubs, but this announcement shows that the government is listening to our concerns.
"So welcome news today, and I hope we will see further support announced in the Budget later this year."
The government said the additional support forms part of wider reforms to the business rates system aimed at supporting retail, hospitality and leisure businesses.
