KYP launches community cinema with Bend It Like Beckham screening

KYP has officially launched its new Community Cinema with a screening of the acclaimed British film Bend It Like Beckham as part of South Asian Heritage Month.

The launch event took place on 23 July and welcomed people of all ages for an evening celebrating film, culture and community.

Guests were treated to complimentary popcorn, nachos and refreshments before watching the 2002 film, which explores themes including identity, family expectations, friendship, ambition and cultural heritage.

Following the screening, audience members took part in a question and answer session with actress Shaheen Khan, who played Mrs Bhamra in the film.

She reflected on the making of Bend It Like Beckham, discussed its lasting cultural impact and spoke about the importance of authentic representation in the arts and media.

Attendees were able to ask questions, hear behind the scenes stories and discuss how the film continues to inspire audiences more than two decades after its release.

The event was delivered in partnership with Film Hub North and introduced the vision for the KYP Community Cinema, which aims to use film to encourage conversation, strengthen community connections and bring people from different backgrounds together.

KYP said the initiative forms part of its wider commitment to promoting inclusion, supporting community cohesion and creating welcoming spaces where everyone feels valued.

Organisers plan to hold further community screenings throughout the year following the successful launch and positive response from those who attended.
