More than 6,400 items of preloved school uniform have been donated to a new volunteer-run uniform project in Heywood in less than three months.
Heywood Uniform Hub CIC said 6,443 items were made available free of charge to local families following the launch of its first Summer Uniform Hub.
The Community Interest Company launched the Summer Uniform Hub at St Luke’s Church on 20 June to help families with the cost of school clothing.
Donations included blazers, PE kits, coats, shoes, bags and everyday school uniform.
The group said local families donated thousands of items, with schools, businesses and other organisations also supporting the project.
A small team of volunteers, along with friends and family, collected, sorted, washed, ironed and distributed the donated clothing throughout the summer.
Heywood Uniform Hub provides good-quality preloved uniform free of charge, with donated clothing reused rather than thrown away.
The Summer Uniform Hub has now finished and the organisation is preparing to move into a permanent base at Recovery Republic in Heywood.
The move will allow the group to continue providing uniform to families throughout the year.
Claire Yardley, director of Heywood Uniform Hub CIC, said the 6,443 items distributed during its first summer showed the level of community support for the project.
