Rochdale Youth Council leader Daniel Murphy announces immediate resignation

Daniel Murphy

Daniel Murphy has announced his resignation from his roles with Rochdale Youth Council and Youth Council UK with immediate effect.

Mr Murphy said he had made the decision after “careful reflection” and that he would continue to support young people outside his formal roles.

Mr Murphy described himself in his resignation announcement as leader of Rochdale Youth Council and Youth Cabinet and an elected board member of the Youth Council UK Executive Board.

He said: “Serving these positions has been an immense privilege. Being nominated by Rochdale Youth Service and democratically elected by peers to help set priorities, lead campaigns, and represent more than 7.8 million young people has been one of the greatest honours of my life so far.

“I remain passionate about ensuring every young person’s voice is heard, valued, and represented regardless of background.”

Mr Murphy did not give a specific reason for his resignation but said there “have to be boundaries”.

He said: “I want the focus to remain firmly on the priorities that matter to young people — safeguarding, mental health, equality of opportunity, violence against young women and girls, digital pressures, and genuine influence on decision-makers — rather than on any individual.”

He thanked Rochdale Youth Service, fellow Youth Cabinet members, the Youth Council UK Executive Board and member organisations, as well as local supporters, family and friends.

Mr Murphy added: “I will support a smooth transition in any way I can and will continue to champion young people from outside these formal roles.”

He later reiterated in his statement: “I am resigning from my roles with immediate effect after careful reflection.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to represent and advocate for young people.

“However, I believe there have to be boundaries, and stepping down is the right decision for me.”
