Edgar Wood Academy celebrates first GCSE results

Pupils at Edgar Wood Academy have received the school's first GCSE results since it opened.

More than 96 per cent of pupils achieved pass grades in science subjects, while more than 95 per cent achieved pass grades in languages.

The academy said its modern foreign languages department was the highest achieving in the local authority.

Twins Mhaz and Umer achieved grades 7 and above across chemistry, biology and physics, while Jezreet received grades 7, 7 and 6 across the three sciences.

All three will continue their studies at Rochdale Sixth Form College, where they will take science-related A levels.

In languages, Megan achieved a grade 7 in French and Tiffany received a grade 8. Jason and Olivia achieved grade 9s in Chinese and Polish respectively.

Alex achieved six grade 9s as well as grades 8 and 7 and will also attend Rochdale Sixth Form College.

Across the cohort, the academy recorded pass rates of more than 65 per cent in maths and more than 68 per cent in English.

The school said 42 per cent of pupils will progress to A levels, with the majority of those attending Rochdale Sixth Form College. Other pupils will study Level 3 vocational qualifications, T levels or take other post-16 routes.

Headteacher Paul Jones said: “We are incredibly proud of our first year 11 students. These results represent years of hard work, determination and resilience, not only from our young people but also from our dedicated staff and supportive families.

“To celebrate our first GCSE results so soon after receiving such positive feedback from Ofsted makes this an especially proud moment in the Academy's journey. These students have helped establish the legacy of Edgar Wood Academy, and we could not be happier with what they have achieved.”

The results follow the academy's recent Ofsted inspection.

Richard Ronksley, chief executive of Altus Education Partnership, said: “Today marks a truly historic moment for Edgar Wood Academy. The first GCSE results are the culmination of years of ambition, commitment and belief from our staff, students and families.

“Following the recent successful Ofsted inspection, these results provide further evidence of what can be achieved when high expectations are matched with exceptional teaching, care and support.

“We are especially proud that so many students are progressing to Rochdale Sixth Form College, where they will continue to flourish and fulfil their ambitions. They have set an outstanding standard for future generations of Edgar Wood Academy students.”
