A man killed during a suspected terrorist incident at a synagogue in Crumpsall may have died as a result of a police bullet, Greater Manchester Police has confirmed.
Greater Manchester Police has confirmed that one of the victims of the suspected terrorist attack at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation on Middleton Road, Crumpsall, sustained a wound that appears to be consistent with a gunshot injury.
According to Chief Constable Sir Stephen Watson, early findings from a Home Office pathologist suggest the injury may have been caused by police gunfire, not the attacker. Officers had opened fire as the suspect, named as Jihad Al Shamie, attempted to gain entry to the synagogue.
Sir Stephen said it is not believed the suspect had a firearm. “It follows therefore, that subject to further forensic examination, this injury may sadly have been sustained as a tragic and unforeseen consequence of the urgently required action taken by my officers to bring this vicious attack to an end.”
The victim was reportedly standing behind the synagogue door along with another individual who was also injured but is expected to recover. Medical staff have confirmed that the second person sustained a gunshot wound that is not life-threatening.
The events unfolded on Wednesday during an apparent attempt by the suspect to enter the synagogue during worship. Officers from GMP’s authorised firearms team responded to the threat and discharged their weapons in a bid to prevent further harm.
The Chief Constable added: “Our thoughts and prayers remain with all of the families, and the wider community, impacted by this incident across Greater Manchester and beyond. Specialist officers are providing support and care for all of those directly affected, including our brave first responders.”
Full post mortem examinations on the deceased are scheduled for later today.
The investigation is ongoing, and GMP is continuing to work with forensic experts, the Home Office, and community representatives to fully understand the sequence of events and provide further updates.
