Two Tottington High School students have raised £1,000 for Millie’s Time, a charity supporting bereaved parents that was founded by a member of staff in memory of her daughter.
Niyah and Lydia organised separate fundraising challenges before joining forces to raise money for Millie’s Time, a charity established by Tottington High School staff member Sarah Dandy after the death of her daughter, Millie, from meningitis at the age of two and a half.
Lydia completed a 5km run every morning before school to raise awareness and sponsorship, while Niyah organised a charity car wash with support from her family.
The pair then spent a day washing cars with backing from the local community, helping to raise a combined total of £1,000.
Sarah Dandy, who founded Millie’s Time after completing the Florence Marathon last year, said,
“I was completely overwhelmed.
The students were never asked to raise money, and they certainly weren’t expected to.
They simply wanted to help another family who may one day experience the unimaginable.
Their kindness, compassion, and determination have genuinely touched my heart.
They have shown maturity beyond their years and demonstrated exactly what community is all about.”
Millie’s Time provides financial support to bereaved parents, giving families time to grieve without the immediate pressure of returning to work.
The students said they wanted to support the charity as a way of thanking Tottington High School for the care and support they had received during their time at the school.
Ms Dandy added, “No thank you was ever necessary.
“Seeing two young people give up their own time to help complete strangers is something truly special.
Teenagers often receive negative attention, but young people like Niyah and Lydia deserve to be celebrated.
They are an inspiration, and we couldn’t be prouder to have them as part of our school community.”
Tottington High School praised the pair for demonstrating the school’s values of compassion and community spirit and thanked their families for supporting the fundraising effort.
The money raised will help Millie’s Time continue supporting bereaved parents across the UK.
