Rochdale’s Ian Murgatroyd selected to represent England Masters Rugby League

Rochdale rugby player Ian Murgatroyd has been selected to represent England in Masters Rugby League. He is due to play against Scotland in Edinburgh this October after earning international recognition for his long standing commitment to the sport.

Ian Murgatroyd has been named in the England Masters Rugby League squad for the international fixture against Scotland, marking a significant milestone in his rugby career.

Known to teammates as “Murgy”, he has been recognised after decades of involvement in both rugby league and rugby union.

Masters Rugby League is open to players aged 35 and over and focuses on participation, friendship and respect, allowing former players to continue enjoying the game in a safe and inclusive environment.

Ahead of the match, Mr Murgatroyd said, “Representing my country is something I never thought I’d have the chance to do at this stage of my rugby journey. It’s a huge honour, and I’m incredibly proud to wear the England shirt. I hope I can do my family, teammates and Rochdale proud.”

Mr Murgatroyd currently plays for Rochdale Masters, a club that continues to grow by providing former players with opportunities to remain active, reconnect with rugby and enjoy the social side of the game.

The club recently completed its first overseas tour to Perpignan, reflecting the continuing development of Masters Rugby League in Rochdale.

Teammates have described Mr Murgatroyd as a dedicated ambassador for the sport, praising his commitment, humility and enthusiasm for rugby.

His England selection is expected to be a proud moment for Rochdale’s rugby community and highlights the opportunities available through Masters Rugby League for players later in life.
