Bury based technology company Avoira has been shortlisted in two categories at the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce Excellence Awards as it marks its 50th anniversary.
The Salford Street company has been named a finalist in the Large Business of the Year and People and Community categories.
The Large Business of the Year shortlist recognises Avoira’s five decades in business, continued growth and its work delivering technology and telecommunications solutions to customers across the UK.
Its second nomination follows a community project aimed at reducing digital exclusion and loneliness among older and visually impaired residents in Bury.
To mark its 50th year in business, Avoira donated 50 Amazon Alexa smart speakers, one for each year the company has been trading, to Age UK Bury.
Working alongside Bury Blind Society, the charity distributed the devices to vulnerable residents, helping them stay in touch with friends and family while providing voice controlled access to music, audiobooks and weather updates.
When the initiative was launched, Age UK Bury chief executive Ania Stark Ketcher said, “Voice activated technology can be transformative for individuals who may struggle with traditional devices.”
Avoira said the project reflected its commitment to innovation, community engagement and responsible business. Over the years the company has also supported organisations including the Fusiliers Museum, the East Lancashire Railway and The Met theatre.
Managing director Andrew Roberts said, “It’s particularly gratifying that our accomplishments and longstanding commitment to supporting the local community have been recognised by our regional business peers in this, our golden anniversary year.
“It’s testament to the strength of our business model and, most importantly, our people whose skills and dedication have driven our success over the past 50 years.”
Founded in 1976, Avoira provides consultancy, installation and ongoing support across information technology, communications, audio visual and digital services.
