Able Cadet Olivia Mason enjoying the District Camp at HMS Raleigh in Cornwall
Many members from Rochdale Sea Cadets applied to go on the District Camp at the same place new naval recruits complete their basic training.
However, it was only Olivia, 13, who was selected by staff members from her unit to go.
Five other Rochdale members attended, but they were selected by district officers.
The Whitworth Community High School Year 8 student said: “On the first day we completed an assault course and then we had a boat visit, we went on two Royal Navy boats and then we learnt about damage control and firefighting.

“On the last day we went around a naval boat and then we went into a submarine, it was weird and we went down inside it. The space inside was really small and a little bit claustrophobic.”
Olivia said on the final night they all enjoyed a karaoke and were allowed to stay up late.
She loved the karaoke, but said the best part of the camp was damage control and firefighting because she learnt a lot. Cadets from all over the country attended.
Olivia said: “I am looking to do equine care and I want to spend a few years looking after animals and then join the Navy when I am a bit older.”
