Prestwich Library will temporarily move to the Phoenix Centre while demolition work begins at the Longfield Centre as part of the wider regeneration of Prestwich Village.
Bury Council has confirmed the relocation will allow the next phase of the regeneration programme to proceed, focusing on the redevelopment of the Longfield Shopping Centre.
The Phoenix Centre, located within St Mary’s Park, will serve as the temporary home for the library. The site is close to other community facilities and has transport links for residents.
The existing library at the Longfield Centre will close temporarily while work is carried out to prepare the new interim location. Library staff will also pack and move materials before setting up services at the Phoenix Centre.
Prestwich Library at the Longfield Centre will close at 4.30pm on Friday 13 March 2026.
The library is expected to reopen at the Phoenix Centre by the end of April 2026, with the exact reopening date to be confirmed closer to the time.
The move forms part of a wider regeneration partnership between Bury Council and placemaking company Muse to transform Prestwich Village. Plans include the construction of a new and larger permanent library alongside community space in the future development.
Jackie Veal, head of wellness and culture at Bury Council, said: “We are grateful for everyone’s patience while the interim library space is prepared. We look forward to welcoming all our members to the Phoenix Centre as soon as we reopen.”
Measures will be introduced to support library users during the closure period. Borrowed books will have their return dates extended and fines will be suspended for a limited period.
