Police prepare major operation as Parklife and other events draw crowds across Greater Manchester

Greater Manchester Police will deploy extra officers this weekend as Parklife returns to Heaton Park alongside several other major events across the city region.

A large scale policing operation is being put in place to support a busy weekend of entertainment and sport across Greater Manchester.

Alongside Parklife in Heaton Park, Take That begin a three night run at the Etihad Stadium, while Lily Allen and The B52s are performing at the AO Arena. India and South Africa will also meet at Emirates Old Trafford in the Women’s Cricket World Cup on Sunday.

Greater Manchester Police said officers will be positioned around the Parklife site to support security staff and assist with traffic management. Additional neighbourhood officers will also be deployed in surrounding areas and Manchester city centre.

Police have already carried out Project Servator deployments around the festival site and on public transport routes. The patrols are designed to deter criminal activity, reassure the public and engage with businesses.

Last year, 39 arrests were made during the Parklife weekend, with most offences linked to drugs. Police said crime levels at the festival have fallen for three consecutive years.

Chief Superintendent Andy Sidebotham, who is leading the policing operation, said, “Parklife is a significant event for Greater Manchester, and we want everyone attending to enjoy the festival safely.

“Extensive planning has taken place alongside event organisers and partner agencies to ensure a safe and well organised event.

“Our priority is to protect the public, support local communities, and maintain a safe environment throughout the weekend. We are confident the vast majority of attendees will act responsibly and enjoy the event.”

He added that theft was the most commonly reported offence at last year’s festival, with mobile phones frequently targeted.

Transport for Greater Manchester has also issued travel advice, with more than 250,000 journeys expected across the weekend.
