A trial scheme aimed at improving road safety around the Hopwood Triangle in Heywood has received a mixed response from residents, with some welcoming the changes while others say traffic has become more congested.
The temporary measures were introduced by Rochdale Council on Monday and will be monitored before any decision is made on whether they should become permanent.
Rochdale Council has begun a trial of new traffic measures around the Hopwood Triangle in Heywood to reduce through traffic and improve safety for residents, school pupils and park users.
As part of the scheme, Middleton Road has been closed at its junction with Manchester Road near St John’s Church. The aim is to stop motorists using the route as a shortcut between the motorway and surrounding roads.
Magdala Street has also become one way towards Manchester Road, creating a one way system at the top of Middleton Road at its junction with Charles Street. The council has also introduced a 20mph speed limit on residential roads in the area and new restrictions on HGV parking in Coronation Avenue.
The authority said the trial was introduced following consultation with local residents, who raised concerns about road safety and heavy goods vehicles parking in the area.

A council spokesperson said,
"The trial is designed to improve safety for residents and pupils from Hopwood Primary School, as well as those who use Hopwood Park. It follows a consultation with local residents, who also raised concerns about HGV parking during the consultation.
The changes will be put in place on a temporary basis so their impact can be assessed before any final decisions are made.
A further public consultation will take place before any decisions are made about whether to make the changes permanent.”
The plans have divided opinion among local residents on social media groups locally.
Rochdale Council has confirmed the measures are temporary and will be reviewed before any decision is made on making the scheme permanent. A further public consultation will take place as part of that process.
