Health experts share fan safety advice as heatwave continues across the UK

With temperatures remaining high across much of the UK, health and safety experts are urging people to use electric fans safely to reduce the risk of overheating and electrical faults.

The advice comes as many households rely on fans to stay cool during the latest spell of hot weather.

Health and safety training provider High Speed Training has issued guidance on the safe use of electric fans as the current heatwave continues.

Dr Richard Anderson, Director of Learning at High Speed Training, said people should take a few simple precautions before switching on a fan.

“With temperatures rising, people across the UK will be reaching for their fans to try and keep cool. Whilst fans are great at helping beat the heat, there are some important safety tips that can help keep them running smoothly and safely.”

The organisation advises people buying a new fan to register it with the manufacturer so they can be contacted if a safety recall is issued.

Users are also encouraged to inspect fans for signs of damage before use, paying particular attention to the plug and cable. Fans that produce buzzing or crackling sounds or have a plug that becomes warm should be switched off immediately and checked by a qualified electrician.

Cleaning accumulated dust from fan blades can also help reduce strain on the motor and lower the risk of overheating. Fans should always be unplugged before cleaning and reassembled according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

The guidance also recommends avoiding leaving fans running unattended or overnight while sleeping. Instead, people are advised to cool bedrooms before going to bed by running a fan with windows open where appropriate.

Positioning is another important safety consideration. Fans should be placed on a flat, stable surface and kept clear of curtains and other hanging materials that could obstruct airflow or create a hazard.

Dr Anderson added, “With temperatures set to stay high for the next week or so, fans are a quick and affordable way to help us keep cool. However, they are still an electrical appliance, so it’s important to ensure that our trusty fans are being used safely. Taking a few minutes for some simple safety checks can help prevent a fire or a nasty accident and keep your fan running smoothly.”
