Large fire at Heywood scrapyard shuts main road as crews battle blaze

Firefighters remain at the scene of a large fire at a scrap metal yard in Heywood. Roads around Bamford Road have been closed while crews work to bring the incident under control.

Emergency services were called to Bamford Road shortly after 4pm on Saturday 2 May following reports of a significant fire involving a large quantity of material at a scrapyard.

Four fire engines from Rochdale, Heywood and Bury attended and remain at the scene. Crews are using three jets and two hose reel jets to tackle the blaze.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said:

At just after 4pm today, Saturday, 2nd May, firefighters were called to reports of a fire involving a large quantity of material at a scrap metal yard on Bamford Road, Heywood. Four fire engines from Rochdale, Heywood and Bury fire stations swiftly attended the scene and remain in attendance at this time. Crews have been working hard to bring the fire under control, using three jets and two hose reel jets to tackle the blaze.The incident is ongoing, and firefighters continue to work to fully extinguish the fire and ensure the area is made safe.

Police have set up a cordon around the site and a section of Bamford Road has been closed. Paramedics are also in attendance.

 

Large plumes of black smoke have been seen rising from the site. Crews are understood to be directing water into a warehouse and several skips within the complex.

There is no confirmed information about injuries at this stage.
