A large moorland fire has broken out on Scout Moor, sending thick plumes of smoke across Rochdale and East Lancashire, prompting a major emergency response.
The blaze was reported earlier today near the wind turbines that dominate the skyline between Rossendale and Rochdale, with residents describing smoke visible for miles across the region.
Fire crews from Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service are currently in attendance, working alongside colleagues from GMFRS.
A spokesperson for Lancashire fire and rescue said:
“We were called to reports of a moorland fire on Scout Moor earlier today. Crews remain at the scene and are working to bring the incident under control.
Due to the terrain and location, firefighting operations are ongoing and may take some time. We would advise the public to avoid the area while we deal with the incident.”
Specialist equipment is being used to access remote parts of the moor, where uneven ground and limited access routes are making firefighting efforts more difficult.
People across Rochdale, Rossendale and surrounding areas have reported seeing large clouds of smoke drifting across the skyline.
Local residents have aslo taken to social media to share images of the fire, with some describing a strong smell of burning in nearby towns.
Authorities are advising anyone affected by smoke to keep windows and doors closed where possible.
Moorland fires can spread rapidly, particularly during dry or breezy conditions. The combination of peat ground, dry vegetation and open exposure makes areas like Scout Moor especially vulnerable.
At this stage, the cause of the fire has not been confirmed. An investigation is expected to take place once the situation is under control.
Emergency services are urging members of the public to avoid the area to allow fire services to deal with the blaze.
