A 32-year-old man has been arrested following a dangerous high-speed police pursuit that began on the M60 near Bury and ended in Salford.
The incident occurred on the evening of Tuesday 29 April 2025, when Greater Manchester Police’s Tactical Vehicle Intercept Unit (TVIU) responded to an automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) alert for a suspected cloned vehicle near junction 16 of the M60.
When the van failed to stop, a pursuit ensued, with the driver reportedly reaching speeds of up to 100mph. Officers say the van was driven the wrong way on the motorway and around roundabouts, posing a serious risk to other road users.
Specialist teams, including the regional helicopter unit (NPAS) and GMP’s dog units, were deployed to assist in tracking the vehicle through residential areas.
The suspect decamped in the Chatsworth Road area of Salford, where he was apprehended at taser-point by officers.
He was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and a separate offence of arson, and remains in custody for questioning.
Detective Inspector Philip Whitehead praised the officers involved, stating: “This brilliant arrest came on the back of a dangerous pursuit, which could have easily ended up causing serious personal or property damage to others on the road.
“Officers utilised the appropriate resources to ensure the incident was brought to a safe conclusion and saw a suspect detained.”
Police are continuing their investigation and are urging anyone with information to come forward, either directly or anonymously through Crimestoppers.
