Thousands of young people across Bury have taken part in a borough wide vote to choose their new Member of Youth Parliament, with turnout exceeding 35 per cent of those eligible.
More than 6,500 young people aged 11 to 18 cast their ballots after schools and colleges set up polling stations and encouraged students to take part in the democratic process.
Alexandro Ghanem, from Radcliffe and educated outside the borough, was elected as Bury’s new Youth MP with 1,905 votes.
He will be supported by two Deputy Members of Youth Parliament. Hannah Clark of Parrenthorn High School received 1,054 votes, while Tobias Dickinson of Bury Church of England High School secured 765 votes.
Alexandro will represent Bury at local, regional and national level through the UK Youth Parliament.
The Mayor of Bury, Councillor Noel Bayley, welcomed the engagement shown by young voters.
He said: “It’s great to see so many young people getting involved in issues that affect them. I’m sure that Alexandro will be a fantastic ambassador for the borough, ably assisted by Hannah and Tobias.
“We are incredibly proud of all the candidates who stood in the election and hope they will all continue to contribute to Bury Youth Cabinet.”
Turnout for the Youth Parliament election was reported to be higher than the national average and above participation levels seen in many local council elections.
