Organisations across Bury are pledging their support for the White Ribbon campaign to end domestic violence and abuse against women.
Bury Council is committed to addressing women’s safety and men’s behaviour towards women. The Borough's Community Safety Plan includes specific priorities on supporting victims and tackling the causes of domestic abuse, whilst our Women and Girls Safety Plan sets out actions including school and community engagement and developing a licensing safety charter.
Friday 25 November is International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and the White Ribbon campaign encourages everyone, especially men and boys, to make the White Ribbon Promise to never use, excuse or remain silent about men’s violence against women.
This year, White Ribbon Day falls in the same week as the start of the FIFA men’s World Cup and #TheGoal campaign highlights 11 traits men and boys can nurture to help create a world of equality and safety for women. To find out what you can do, visit: White Ribbon Day 2022 — White Ribbon UK
White Ribbon Day coincides with the UN’s 16 Days of Activism against Gender Based Violence, a series of events are planned across the borough including:
- Women of Worth Group knitting White Ribbons to be displayed outside the Town Hall on 25 Nov
- Information and promotion to be displayed during football matches at Bury FC on 26 and 27 Nov and at Radcliffe FC's upcoming home game
- Sarfraz Malik will be reading a poem on 27 Nov at the Women’s Football Match at Bury FC
- Safenet will be wrapping Christmas presents on 3-4 Dec in the Mill Gate shopping centre
Cllr Richard Gold, Cabinet Member for Finance and Communities and White Ribbon Ambassador said: “Bury Council and our partners are committed, as part of our LET’S Do It vision, to supporting women’s safety, and ending domestic violence and abuse against women and girls. We must be clear it is unacceptable to use, excuse or remain silent about men’s violence against women.”
