A series of road safety upgrades are being introduced in Kirkholt as part of wider investment into highways across the borough.
Work has begun on a package of improvements focused around Balderstone Road and the Strand shopping area.
The project includes upgrading an existing pedestrian crossing on Balderstone Road to a push button facility near the Strand, a busy community and shopping destination.
New footpaths will also be created along Balderstone Road around the Strand to make it safer and easier for pedestrians to move around the area. Steps leading to the crossing will be improved and ramp access will also be upgraded.
A new zebra crossing will be installed on Balderstone Road close to its junction with Ruskin Road.
Further work will take place on Daventry Road near the Kirkholt medical practice, where the road will be realigned to improve visibility around a bend. A new footpath will also be created on one side of the road where there is currently no pedestrian route.
Traffic calming measures are also planned along Balderstone Road to help slow vehicles and improve safety for people using the area.
Councillor Shah Wazir, cabinet member for highways at Rochdale Borough Council, said: “These improvements, which represent a big investment into the area, will provide a welcome boost to road safety in a thriving neighbourhood.
“The Strand is a fantastic and well used community and shopping facility which a large number of people visit each day, so it's vital that they can get around this area safely and easily and make the most of being out and about in the community.
“I’m really pleased that this work is getting under way and I can’t wait to see the end result.”
The scheme is expected to be completed during the summer.
It forms part of a wider programme of road safety improvements funded by Transport for Greater Manchester.
New pedestrian crossings have already been installed on Oldham Road in Middleton, Shawclough Road in Rochdale and Halifax Road in Smallbridge. A further scheme in the Hopwood Triangle area of Heywood is also being developed.
