Seven more Rochdale schools to offer free breakfast clubs

Seven more Rochdale schools will offer free breakfast clubs from September after joining a national programme.

The expansion will bring the number of local schools taking part to 10.

The programme gives primary-aged pupils a free breakfast before lessons and allows children to arrive at school up to 30 minutes earlier at no extra cost.

The seven schools joining are Shawclough Community Primary School, Sandbrook Community Primary School, St John's Roman Catholic Primary School, Heybrook Primary School, Deeplish Primary Academy, Holy Family Roman Catholic Primary School and Moorhouse Academy.

Bamford Academy, Broadfield Community Primary School and Springside are already taking part.

Participating families are estimated to save up to £450 a year and have up to 95 additional hours of childcare at the start of the school day.

Councillor Rachel Massey, Rochdale Borough Council's cabinet member for children’s services and education, said: “Breakfast before school is incredibly important as it sets pupils up for a fun and productive day of learning, social interaction and achievement which is great for their wellbeing and development.

“By our schools embracing this new programme, children are not only coming to the classroom on a full stomach, they are getting the chance to spend extra time with their friends and enjoy activities such as reading and crafts before school starts.

“This is a fantastic programme to be involved in and I look forward to more of our schools taking part in the future as it expands.”

Other schools across the borough already provide breakfast clubs or other forms of breakfast support outside the programme.

The council said eating breakfast before school can improve literacy and numeracy skills and help children with focus and behaviour in the classroom.
