More than nine in ten children in Bury have been offered a place at their first choice secondary school for September 2026, according to newly released placement figures.
Bury Council confirmed that 90.2 percent of pupils will attend their preferred secondary school this autumn, a rise of 1.2 percent compared with 2025.
A total of 2,354 applications were received from Bury residents for secondary school places starting in September 2026.
Of those, 2,123 pupils were offered their first preference school. A further 146 children, representing 6.2 percent of applicants, received their second choice, while 32 pupils, or 1.4 percent, were offered their third preference.
In 53 cases, representing 2.2 percent of applicants, an alternative school place was offered after none of the preferred options could be met.
Overall, 97.8 percent of Bury pupils received a place at one of their preferred secondary schools.
To support families preparing for the move to secondary education, a free Year 6 to Year 7 transition event will take place on 11 March between 3pm and 6pm at the Elizabethan Suite in Bury.
The event will bring together local secondary schools and support services to provide advice and guidance to families ahead of the transition.
Organisations expected to attend include Mentally Healthy Schools, the Virtual School Team, Kooth, GM Travel, Free School Meals services, the Youth Service, Educational Psychology, Early Help, Bury SENDIASS, the NSPCC and the Bury EHC Team.
Families do not need to book in advance and can attend the event to speak directly with advisers and representatives from participating services.
