Ramsbottom once again played host to the World Black Pudding Throwing Championships, with crowds filling Bridge Street to watch competitors from across the UK and as far afield as Japan, Peru, Canada and Australia.
The annual contest, held outside The Oaks pub, saw hundreds of people turn out despite heavy rain. The aim was simple: throw Bury black puddings at stacks of Yorkshire puddings set on a 20-foot plinth. Each competitor paid £2 for three throws, with proceeds going to local charities.
This year’s event carried extra significance following the death of long-time organiser Phil Taylor, who passed away earlier in the year. After the championships were initially cancelled in July, volunteers stepped in to ensure they went ahead in his memory.

Host Paul Jenkins provided five hours of live commentary, later remarking: “It’s closing the High Street to lob food at a scaff tower while everybody stands in the rain, cheers each other on and raises money for local charities, and inviting the world to join in with that too.”
Among the international competitors was Japanese comedian Daisuke Miyagawa, who filmed the event for a special programme.

Alongside the throwing, a music festival called Pud Rocks took place behind The Oaks, featuring 15 live acts and raising funds for Bury Hospice. The two stages were dedicated to Phil Taylor and Harrison Rothwell, another much-loved Ramsbottom figure who died earlier this year.
