TWO Whitworth Community High School students were rewarded with Mayor of Whitworth Young Achiever awards for their outstanding work.
Alice Kowal was nominated by her Guide Leader for her Girlguiding achievements alongside her volunteering and singing and for having ‘wonderfully kind nature’.
While Harry Henshaw was put forward by Whitworth Headteacher Andrew Oliver for his ‘outstanding leadership skills, determination and commitment’ which were pivotal in the school’s Youth Enterprise team raising £2,264.43p for Rossendale Hospice.
They were both invited to a special meeting of Whitworth Town Council where Mayor Councillor Janet Whitehead presented them with a Young Achiever certificate and plaque.
Alice, 14, is the first Guide in Whitworth to be awarded the prestigious Girlguiding Gold Award; she is also a Young Leader in the Rainbows section and spent 18 months volunteering for The Lighthouse Community Foodshare.
She said: “I am a Young Leader helping with Rainbows, I do all the games and sometimes help with the activities and help to set up. “
Alice is now a Ranger Guide and said becoming a Young Leader had boosted her confidence.
Last year, she won a North West Girlguiding singing competition and she spent time over Easter in London at Brit School where she met young people from all over the world – from Bulgaria to Switzerland – and they performed a mini concert.
Alice has been accepted as one of the youngest participants on a prestigious artist development programme ‘In the Making’ for 14-18-year-olds.
She will attend a week-long music residential at the University of Huddersfield in the summer, then online meetings throughout the year.
This will culminate in her producing her own original song that will be give radio time.
She hopes to pursue a music career
Harry, 14, explained: “When it came to the Youth Enterprise presentation, I helped all of the other members of the team to deliver their speeches.
“I was pushing the Youth Enterprise team like a rocket engine; some people needed a bit more push to get them out of their comfort zone.
“Taking part in the programme boosted my leadership skills, although I am quite a confident person.”
Harry is hoping to pursue a career in lighting and get involved in festivals, events and corporate projects.
His mum Vickie has previously won a Town Council award for her volunteering work at Whitworth Library.
Alice’s Guide Leader Elaine was one of two recipients on the night to receive a Dr Alan Morris Award for 40 years Girlguiding service.
