Video footage has emerged from a community policing event at Bury Police Headquarters showing Cllr Tamoor Tariq, the Deputy Council Leader for Bury, in what appears to be him shouting at police officers down the corridor.
The video depicts Cllr Tariq shouting down a corridor amid what some are describing as an "unhinged rampage."
The community policing event on Wednesday 18th October, intended to foster positive relations between the police and the local community, was thrown into chaos as attendees and officers alike were caught off guard by the sudden outburst. The reason behind Cllr Tariq's intense reaction remains unclear, though speculations are rife.
Sources from the event reported a palpable tension in the room even before the eruption, with Cllr Tamoor Tariq allegedly prompting officers to stroke his ego. One witness, who asked to remain anonymous, stated, "The event was supposed to be about collaboration and understanding. We were all taken aback when Cllr Tariq began shouting.
The video clip, lasting a little over a minute, does not provide a clear context for the outburst. It begins with Cllr Tamoor Tariq standing in a doorway, shouting at officers as they walk away.
While the video that has been circulated has caused a storm, it's essential to note that a brief clip may not capture the entirety of the incident.
Both Bury Labour and Cllr Tamoor Tariq have been approached for comment and have not responded.
A spokesperson for Bury Council, when approached for comment said: “There’s no statement to give as Cllr conduct is considered when there’s a complaint.”
Several local representatives and community leaders have expressed their concerns and are seeking a thorough investigation to understand the circumstances leading up to and surrounding the altercation.
Cllr, Russell Bernstein, the Leader of Bury Conservatives has said: “My understanding is that at a community meeting at GMP Bury Divisional HQ on Wednesday evening of the 18th, Councillor Tariq’s behaviour was unruly and threatening which is totally unacceptable. This behaviour I understand was so bad that GMP Bury Division are looking to see if it reached a threshold which could lead to a criminal investigation.
I have total confidence in GMP Bury Division reaching whatever decision they believe to be right. Notwithstanding the outcome of a police investigation, it would seem to me to be abundantly clear that Councillor Tariq who is Deputy Leader of Council, behaved in a manner which is unacceptable and against the high expectations of behaviour which as Elected Members we all need to adhere to.
As such I would expect Bury Labour and the Council to take the appropriate disciplinary action which demonstrates that both Bury Labour and the Council have zero tolerance with such unacceptable behaviour.
Greater Manchester Police have been contacted for comments.
Cllr Tamoor Tariq, a prominent figure in the Bury community as Deputy Leader for the Council, has recently been in the news. On the same day, he was photographed parking on double yellow lines outside of the police station.
Following the published article, residents also sent in further images of his vehicle parked on other double yellow lines within the borough.
