Tudor Court care home pilots smart sensor technology to improve resident safety

A care facility in Heywood is trialling new technology that could transform how support is delivered to vulnerable people across Rochdale.

Non-intrusive wellbeing sensors have been installed at Tudor Court, a specialist rehabilitation setting for people recovering after hospital stays. The new system, launched by Rochdale Borough Council’s adult care service in partnership with the NHS, monitors residents 24 hours a day and alerts staff to potential concerns in real time.

The technology is designed to complement traditional face-to-face care, helping staff respond quickly to issues such as falls or changes in breathing. By providing extra oversight without disturbing residents, the system supports safer, more personalised care while promoting independence.

Councillor Iftikhar Ahmed, cabinet member for adult care, said the pilot represents a step forward in Rochdale’s use of technology in care. He said:

This is a really innovative piece of technology that is empowering staff to deliver high-quality care and support for our older and vulnerable residents. It enhances safety and dignity for people receiving intermediate care.

Councillor Daalat Ali, cabinet member for health, praised the impact the pilot is already having.

This technology is delivering high-quality care for vulnerable people, ensuring the support they receive is timely, person-centred and responsive. It is another innovative example of how adult care, in partnership with the NHS, is using innovation in care technology to meet the care needs of people, helping them to maintain their independence in a place of their choice.

The sensors, which do not use cameras or microphones, track environmental and movement patterns to flag up health concerns early. Staff can then intervene quickly, potentially preventing emergency hospital admissions.

The council says the technology will be evaluated over the coming months, with the aim of rolling it out across more care settings if successful.
