A serious incident on the A627(M) has brought traffic to a standstill, with emergency services on the scene and delays expected into the evening. More updates to follow.
A major traffic incident on the A627(M) near Sandbrook Retail Park has caused significant disruption this afternoon, Sunday 26 October, after a car overturned following a collision with a streetlight.
Speaking to Roch Valley Radio, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they were called to the scene at around 13.45. Two fire engines from Rochdale, along with a specialist rescue unit from Ashton, were dispatched to deal with the incident.
The crash, which involved a single vehicle, resulted in the car overturning. One male was able to free himself from the vehicle before emergency services arrived.
Firefighters and technical crews remain at the scene working alongside Highways Agency teams to make the area safe.
A spokesperson for GMFRS said:
“At around 2.45pm this afternoon, Sunday, 26th October, firefighters were called to reports of a crash on the A627 in Rochdale near Sandbrook Retail Park.
“Two fire engines from Rochdale fire station, along with the technical rescue unit from Ashton fire station, quickly arrived at the scene where a car had crashed into the streetlighting and overturned. One male casualty self-rescued from the vehicle before the arrival of the fire service.
“Crews remain at the scene while they work with the Highways Agency to make the area safe.”
Traffic has been heavily affected in the area, with congestion spreading to nearby roads including Edinburgh Way and the A58. Drivers are advised to avoid the area if possible while recovery and safety work continues.
There are currently no reports of serious injuries.

One male was taken to hospital and is being treated for his injures
