Three members of Greater Manchester Police staff, including two sergeants and a custody officer, were injured on New Year’s Day while processing a suspect at Manchester Airport.
The officers were assaulted during routine custody procedures following a suspected breach of security at the airport. A man in his 20s was arrested at the scene on suspicion of assault and breach of security.
Greater Manchester Police confirmed that the staff sustained multiple injuries, including a fractured bone, bite marks, scratches, and an injured wrist. All three were taken to hospital but have since been discharged.
The man remains in police custody while enquiries continue.
Superintendent Helen Caldbeck said the attack was “simply not acceptable,” especially given the timing. “Emergency workers are serving the public and trying to keep people safe during the festive season and should not have to go to hospital when they are doing their jobs,” she said.
The superintendent added: “Thankfully, they are all recovering from their injuries. We will be progressing this case and want to send a clear message that we will not accept this behaviour.”
