A striking new mural celebrating mental health awareness has been unveiled outside Healey Deli in Whitworth, sparking praise from local residents and campaigners alike.
The artwork, titled The Healey Angel, was painted by celebrated local artist Jamie Buckley and stands as a symbol of resilience, compassion, and support for those struggling with mental health.
Surrounded by a backdrop of vibrant flowers, the angel figure is described as a visual message of empathy, growth and hope. Her calm gaze is intended to reflect a sense of understanding and reassurance for people facing emotional difficulties.
The project has been welcomed as a heartfelt gesture towards mental health awareness in Rochdale and Whitworth, particularly amid ongoing efforts to reduce stigma and promote open conversation around the subject.
A statement from the deli, which commissioned the piece, reads: “This mural is dedicated to everyone who has ever felt overwhelmed, lost or unheard. It is here to encourage conversation, reduce stigma and remind people that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.”
The mural was created with the support of Rachel Ward from Healey Dell Nature Reserve, who praised the community spirit behind the work and said it serves as a reminder that “support is always available, and no one is ever alone.”

Artist Jamie Buckley, already known for murals of singer Lisa Stansfield and wildlife themes across the borough, was commended for his work on the project. “Big up Jamie Buckley,” the deli posted on social media. “A massively creative local genius … never known anyone to drink as much Yorkshire tea as this guy.”
Residents and visitors have already begun praising the mural, with local artist Alison Ralph calling it “amazing” and entertainer Jimmy Cricket describing Jamie Buckley as “a wonderful artist.”
