Rochdale and Bury residents have been formally recognised with Deputy Lieutenant roles in Greater Manchester, as part of a 12-person appointment announced in The London Gazette.
Two well-known local figures, insurance professional and community volunteer Ian Madeley from Rochdale, and ITV stakeholder engagement manager Amanda-Jane (AJ) Dean from Bury, are among the new Deputy Lieutenants appointed by the Lord-Lieutenant of Greater Manchester.
The honorary roles support the Lord-Lieutenant in representing the monarch at a county level, and are awarded to individuals with a proven track record of public service, community leadership, or professional excellence.
Rochdale’s Ian Madeley: lifelong volunteer and community figure
Born in Oldham and a resident of Rochdale since 1996, Ian Madeley has spent over four decades as an insurance broker while committing his free time to voluntary service through Rotary, Freemasonry, and lifesaving instruction.
His volunteering journey began at the age of 13 as a lifesaving instructor, and continued through his presidency of Saddleworth Rotaract in 1992 and Rochdale Rotary in 2005, the organisation’s centenary year. He also helped launch one of the UK’s first Rotaserv clubs, encouraging service from people aged 30 to 40.
In recent years, Mr Madeley has extended his community work through Freemasonry, using the network to further local charitable initiatives.
Bury’s AJ Dean: media leader with roots in local broadcasting
Amanda-Jane Dean, known as AJ, is a seasoned communications and media specialist based in Bury. She currently leads stakeholder engagement across ITV in the North and has helped shape some of the broadcaster’s biggest projects, including milestone anniversaries for Coronation Street and Emmerdale.
Her career began at the BBC in London before expanding into global media roles in Sydney and back in Manchester, where she headed PR at iconic animation studio Cosgrove Hall Films. She later returned to Granada, now ITV, where her career had first begun as a student.
A champion of inclusion and diversity, AJ has been a visible supporter of LGBTQ+ colleagues through ITV Pride and continues to mentor rising talent across the business. Her personal story recently came full circle after she married her childhood sweetheart, also from Bury, decades after they first met.
Lord-Lieutenant welcomes appointments
The Lord-Lieutenant of Greater Manchester welcomed all 12 new Deputy Lieutenants, stating the appointments recognise “outstanding service and commitment to the people of our region”.
While the roles are ceremonial, Deputy Lieutenants often attend civic functions, support royal visits, and engage with voluntary and community organisations on behalf of the Crown.
Other appointments this year include university leaders, social campaigners, and business innovators from across Greater Manchester.
