Residents on Daisy Street, Rochdale came together on Saturday 3 May for a VE Day street party organised by the New Pioneers Spotland Community Centre.
Held between 12.30pm and 3.00pm, the free event welcomed people of all ages for an afternoon of food, conversation and community. Volunteers spent the morning preparing home-cooked dishes, served alongside tea, cakes and other refreshments.
Daisy Silva, manager of the New Pioneers Programme, said:
“We couldn't believe how many residents turned out – seeing over 250 people from all corners of our community was truly overwhelming. The atmosphere was electric. Children were racing about playing traditional games, their laughter echoing across the street. Parents and grandparents were chatting along, and neighbours were connecting.
“Our volunteers worked tirelessly from dawn, setting up bunting, preparing food stations, and organising activities. Thanks to their incredible dedication and the Northern Rail Community Partnership funding, we were able to offer everything free of charge. This wasn't just about remembering VE Day – it was about bringing our community together, creating new bonds, and showing that the spirit of unity from 1945 is still alive in 2025.”
Another local resident, Louise Scott, also praised the organisers:
“Thank you to everyone at New Pioneers Spotland Community Centre for a fantastic VE Day street party!”
The New Pioneers Programme supports local residents who are unemployed or face barriers to education, work or services. Delivered in partnership with Rochdale Boroughwide Housing and Rochdale Borough Council, the project offers one-to-one support, mentoring and group activities designed to boost wellbeing and build stronger neighbourhoods.
The celebration was open to all and drew a steady stream of visitors throughout the afternoon. Local people described it as a simple but meaningful way to connect with neighbours and recognise shared history.
