A 59-year-old man from Middleton has been convicted of manslaughter after driving into a teenager who was sitting on a stolen e-bike.
Terrence King, of Castlerrigg Drive, struck 15-year-old Devon Simmonds-Caines with his Vauxhall Insignia on Rowrah Crescent, Middleton, just before midday on 22 July 2025. Devon suffered multiple unsurvivable injuries and was pronounced dead following the incident.
The teenager had earlier stolen the e-bike along with another youth. The court heard that King, who had purchased the bike himself, set out to recover it and located Devon sitting on the vehicle in a driveway.
CCTV footage shown during the trial captured King accelerating before deliberately driving into the teen. He was arrested at the scene.
At Minshull Street Crown Court, Manchester, the jury was unable to reach a verdict on a charge of murder. However, King admitted causing Devon’s death and was directed to be found guilty of manslaughter.
He has been remanded in custody and will be sentenced at a later date.
The case raised significant concerns about the escalation of disputes into fatal violence and the risks posed by vigilante-style responses to petty theft.
