Residents across Bury are being encouraged to show their support for this year’s Poppy Appeal, launched by the borough’s mayor as the country prepares to mark Remembrance Day.
Councillor Noel Bayley, Mayor of Bury, officially launched the annual Poppy Appeal on behalf of the Royal British Legion, calling on the local community to reflect on the sacrifices of past and present service personnel.
The Poppy Appeal raises vital funds to support members of the armed forces, veterans, and their families. Poppies are now available across the borough at a range of outlets, including supermarkets, schools, and public buildings, as well as online through the Royal British Legion's website.
Speaking at the launch, Cllr Bayley said:
“As Mayor of Bury, I am honoured to support the launch of this year’s Poppy Appeal. Each November, our community comes together to remember the brave men and women who have served, sacrificed, and stood for peace and freedom across generations.
“The poppy is a powerful reminder of the courage shown by those in our armed forces, past and present. It also represents our collective commitment to ensuring that veterans and their families receive the care and support they deserve.”
The mayor added that public participation is crucial to the appeal’s success and encouraged people to attend remembrance events, wear their poppy with pride, and donate where they can.
Money raised through the appeal contributes to services such as financial assistance, mental health support, and advice for serving members and veterans adjusting to civilian life.
The Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal is one of the UK's most recognisable charity campaigns and plays a vital role in ensuring that the needs of the armed forces community are met year-round.
Remembrance Sunday this year falls on 9 November, with services and parades planned throughout Bury and across the country.
