A busy main road in Bury town centre will be shut for five months from today Monday, January 5, as part of a £6m active travel overhaul. Market Street will be closed to traffic until June 26 as the council carries out works to introduce new cycle lanes and crossing signals.
The closure will take place in phases, starting at Angouleme Way junction and moving down the length of the road in five sections. Diversions are in place for motorists, but the closure could cause delays and congestion at peak times.
There will still be access to both Bury College’s Woodbury Centre and the Millenium Campus, as well as to the car park.
The works, part of phase two of the Fishpool and Pimhole Bee Active travel scheme, could take up to 18 months. But Bury Council has reassured residents they expect them to be completed within 24 weeks.
Funded by a £5.7m transport fund from the government’s City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement (CRSTS) and the Mayor’s Challenge Fund, the project will make it ‘safer and easier to walk, wheel or cycle for local journeys’, according to the council. The changes will also upgrade existing junctions, introduce traffic calming measures and new crossing points.
A Bury Council spokesperson said: “The road closure on Market Street is due to begin on January 5. It is needed to support the delivery of a major project that forms part of phase two of the Fishpool and Pimhole Bee Active Travel Scheme.
“The scheme aims to make it safer and easier to walk, wheel or cycle locally. It also encourages healthier and more sustainable ways to travel.
“While there will be some disruption during the works, there are long-term benefits to the scheme, and we’re making every effort to minimise inconvenience.
The closure coincides with works taking place at nearby Rochdale Road, as footpath widening works take place at the junction with Albert St.
A council spokesperson said: “During January footpath widening works will be carried out and Albert St/Rochdale Rd junction will be permanently closed.”
They warned road users to ‘allow extra time’ for their journeys.
