A 49-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following two serious road traffic incidents in Rochdale on Saturday afternoon (3 May), in which four people were injured – one critically.

Greater Manchester Police confirmed that emergency services were called to the scene at around 2.30pm after reports that a car had collided with pedestrians at two separate locations: Woodgate Avenue and Whitworth Road.

Three people, including a child, were injured on Woodgate Avenue. Police say all suffered minor injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing. They were taken to hospital for treatment.

At Whitworth Road, a woman sustained potentially life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to hospital. She remains in a critical condition.

The driver, a 49-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of assault and attempted murder. He has been detained in hospital, and officers are not seeking anyone else in connection with the incident. Police have confirmed it is not being treated as terrorism-related.

A large emergency response was seen at the scene on Whitworth Road, which was closed in both directions from Yorkshire Street to St Mary’s Way. Bury Road was also closed between Woodlands Avenue and Meadowcroft Lane as officers cordoned off the area to carry out forensic investigations. Ground markings were visible around two vehicles believed to be involved.

Assistant Chief Constable John Webster said: “We are deeply saddened by the tragic events that occurred in Rochdale today. Our officers are supporting the victims and their families at this time.

“We believe this to be an isolated incident with one lone offender arrested and in hospital. Additional resources will remain deployed to the local area, please speak to officers if you have any concerns.

“We urge anyone with information to come forward and assist us in our efforts. We will provide updates as more details become available."

Police are continuing their investigation, and a scene remains in place on Whitworth Road. Members of the public with any information are encouraged to contact police or speak directly to officers in the area.
