A man has been arrested after officers were threatened and chased with a knife in Heywood on Sunday morning. Police used a taser to detain the suspect.
Officers were called to West Starkey Street at around 8am, today, 26 April following reports of a disturbance.
Greater Manchester Police said a man came downstairs from a property holding a knife and made threats towards officers at the scene.
The suspect then chased officers along the street while still armed. Police deployed a taser and detained him.
He was arrested on suspicion of attempted section 18 assault and remains in custody for questioning.
Detective Superintendent Richard Hunt said;
"We have been celebrating the work of our response officers all week and this perfectly sums up the risks frontline officers take day in, day out to protect the public.
Incidents like this are often fast-moving and unpredictable, and can be incredibly challenging.
Our two officers remained calm and professional throughout a dangerous situation that could have escalated into something far worse.
Response policing is one of the most demanding, dynamic and vital functions within modern policing, and I am incredibly proud of how they dealt with this.
Not only did they handle the immediate danger with professionalism and bravery, but they then carried on with the aftermath of paperwork and rolled on to the next job, demonstrating the resilience and dedication that defines our response officers.”
Roch Valley Radio spoke to nearby residents this afternoon, and one said;
“It all happened so fast, one minute everything was quiet and the next there were police shouting and running.
It was really frightening to see someone with a knife chasing officers down the street.
We’re just relieved nobody was seriously hurt.”
