Local mental health champion Jo Allen awarded British Empire Medal for community service

Jo Allen - CEO - The Counselling and Family Centre

The head of a Greater Manchester mental health charity has been recognised in the King's Birthday Honours List for her decades-long dedication to improving lives.

Jo Allen, chief executive of The Counselling and Family Centre (CFC), which operates in Altrincham and Bury, has been awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) for her services to mental health and the community.

Jo began her journey with the charity as a volunteer over 20 years ago. Since then, she has played a pivotal role in transforming it into a leading regional support hub, helping more than 2,500 people each year. CFC provides counselling, training, and outreach, with a focus on accessibility and community wellbeing.

Throughout her leadership, the charity has introduced services tailored to the needs of local families, including school-based mental health support, workplace training, and even a therapeutic allotment. During the COVID19 crisis, Jo helped the centre shift to remote counselling in just five days, ensuring no disruption in care during a time of soaring demand.

Reacting to the honour, Jo said: “It’s a huge honour to receive this award, but the truth is, this recognition belongs to the whole team. I’m proud of what we’ve built together at The Counselling and Family Centre, which helps people feel heard, supported, and empowered.”

Jonathan Moore, chair of the board at CFC, described her as the “driving force” behind the charity’s growth, saying: “Her commitment, energy, and innovation are unparalleled. This recognition is richly deserved and reflects the profound impact she’s had on thousands of lives.”

The BEM is awarded for hands-on service to local communities, recognising the work of ‘unsung heroes’. Jo’s award comes amid rising public awareness about the importance of mental health care, especially for those facing financial hardship or crisis. CFC operates a means-based pricing model, ensuring no one is turned away for lack of funds.

Founded in 1975, the charity has become a cornerstone of mental health provision across Trafford and Greater Manchester.
