Bury North’s James Frith MP has called on the government to tackle rogue residential management companies.
Speaking in the House of Commons on Thursday 23 January, Mr Frith raised the issue of Wharfside Apartments and Broadoaks in Brandlesholme and Fairfield.
Homeowners at both properties have complained of alarming practices of the residential management company responsible for the properties. This has included overpricing, sudden price changes, premature bailiff actions, and non-compliance with fire safety and accessibility standards. It is believed that over 100 people have been affected by this across Bury North.
The Bury North MP has pressed the government on the urgent need for legislation to address these issues.
Mr Frith said: “Residential Management Group is riding roughshod over my constituents. Despite dutifully paying their services charges, these homeowners have been hit with additional fees and have been neglected and exploited by this company.
“The firm has shown no interest in addressing the concerns raised, not even having the courtesy to respond to my correspondence on this matter. I am working hard in parliament to hold RMG to account on their disgraceful treatment of homeowners in Bury North.”
Mr Frith added that he is part of a 70-strong group of MPs who have constituents affected by residential management companies. MPs have already grilled the senior team of one such firm, and the Labour MP for Bury North confirmed that he “will be inviting RMG to attend a meeting in parliament with the MPs also representing homeowners facing the same level of contemptuous behaviour”.
Mandy Ryder, homeowner at Wharfside in Brandlesholme, said: “We’ve been struggling for years with this company. While we decided to part ways with RMG and set up our own management company, they are still refusing to acknowledge any wrongdoing or make amends for the years of terrible service, overcharging and outright malpractice we had to endure.
“We’re grateful for James’ continued efforts on this issue and we will work together to get the outcome we all deserve”.
Bernie Mulligan, homeowner at Broadoaks in Fairfied, said: “I’m really pleased that James Frith is taking this issue up. We feel completely ignored by RMG and it’s great that we’ve got our MP on our side, fighting for us.”
Responding to Mr Frith in parliament, Lucy Powell, the Leader of the House of Commons, confirmed that the Labour government would be bringing forward legislation to reform leasehold later in this parliament.
