A further 400 energy-efficient street lights are to be installed this coming year as part of a five-year £5.5 million column replacement programme.
The new lights will use less electricity and emit less carbon than traditional sodium lights. This will save money on energy and maintenance costs as they have a much longer lifespan.
The lamps also reduce light pollution, concentrating a white light onto roads and footways where it is needed.
Councillor Alan Quinn, cabinet member for the environment, climate change and operations, said: “It’s another win-win situation – replacing the lights saves money and is better for the environment.
“This is just one part of our plan to make Bury carbon-neutral and create a more sustainable world for future generations.”
